Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)
The Adobe website explains the Adobe PDF format as
follows:
"Invented by Adobe Systems and perfected over 15 years, Adobe Portable
Document Format (PDF) lets you capture and view robust information — from
any application, on any computer system — and share it with anyone around
the world. Individuals, businesses, and government agencies everywhere trust
and rely on Adobe® PDF to communicate their ideas and vision."
This format is a "defacto" standard in the internet world.
Literally thousands of books, pamphlets, brochures and other printed material is
converted to PDF form every day. PDF files are transferred from computer to
computer, used on CD-ROMs and DVDs and downloaded from the internet.
PDF documents are designed to preserve the look and feel
of the original files, regardless of how that file is created. Whether created
in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint or Autodesk AutoCAD,
the PDF document looks and prints exactly the same as the original. The
recipient of the PDF does not need to have the original application program on
the computer being used to view or print the PDF. Colors, line widths,
page formatting and fonts of the original file are all preserved in the PDF. The
makes the PDF format pretty much a universal standard.
